Schools are gearing up for a recycling-led competition that’ll see them trade trash for treats and prizes!

Tygerberg, South Africa (20 January 2025) — In an effort to get more young people into the habit of recycling early on and nip the litterbugs in the bud, an exciting initiative is encouraging schools to trade trash for treats!

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (who are behind the incredible better.bellville.together effort) has teamed up with Producer Responsibility Organisation Metpac-SA to make the Trash 4 Treats competition happen. Aimed at schools in disadvantaged communities, the overarching hope is that more young people will see recycling not just as a means for competitive fun but for long-lasting change.

Because information surrounding eco-consciousness is largely privileged, the schools will get to learn all about why it matters for their communities and futures in the most practical way.

The competition invites schools to collect as much recyclable waste as possible, affording them a chance to win treats and wonderful prizes for the big fish catches.

The school that collects the most waste will be up to win a share of R30,000 (school upgrades incoming!), while the learners who bring in the most cans and tins are up for tasty treats from the pop-up spaza.

There is still time for schools eager to participate and sign up, with nine spots left in the competitor sheet. Schools can either register themselves or be nominated by contacting monique.Muller@gtp.org.za.

Meanwhile, in other environmental news that made us proud, community members and shelter dogs joined forces to give Lagoon Beach some love over the weekend by collecting litter—a whopping 284 kilograms at that!
