Community members and shelter dogs joined forces to give Lagoon Beach some love over the weekend by collecting litter! Beyond recyclables getting another chance, several of the dogs might also have their shot at a forever home.
Lagoon Beach, South Africa (13 January 2025) — Like the many beach-goers who have treated themselves to clean slates in the spirit of the New Year, Lagoon Beach in Cape Town, too, got a fresh start to 2025 thanks to community members and shelter dogs alike.
On Saturday, 11 January, two organisations united to beautify the beach and give shelter animals the spotlight.
Environmental organisation Save a Fishie and the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa gathered with refuse bags, an abundance of good vibes and adorable shelter dogs and pups to do some good for the environment whilst giving the animals a chance to meet new people.
Community members came out in numbers to join them with help, food donations and the company of their own dogs for a day that brought about many smiles.
For shelter dogs, getting a chance to meet potential adopters in person is imperative! Like a dating website, a few cute pictures and some nice words can only say so much; the real magic happens in-person.
“Many of these dogs are the result of a different sort of litter who like the recyclable items collected [Saturday] also deserve a second chance at a new life,” the AWS said.
“Thank you again to everyone who participated in yesterday’s successful beach cleanup and thoroughly enjoyable adoption dog walk that is likely to result in several dogs finding loving forever homes.”
As for the clean-up, Save a Fishie proudly shared that a whopping 284 kilograms of litter was collected by all the champions who took part.
