The Toys for Trash concept is so simple but so clever… and it is making a massive difference to both the environment and kids in this informal settlement.
Johannesburg, South Africa (07 March 2022) – A recycling “swap shop” is making a massive difference for the environment and the kids in Fairland, Johannesburg.
The ‘Toys for Trash’ concept is part of Stephan Ferreira’s ‘Charity Begins With Me‘ organisation, and the idea rewards kids for their recycling. The kids collect recyclable goods by cleaning their homes or the area they live in and then bring cans, tin and plastic to the toy store where they can exchange them for anything they like.
And the kids love it!
“The kids love to pick out items, and whenever they see a can, tin or plastic bottle, they rush to pick it up, which makes for a cleaner environment.”

The ‘Toys for Trash’ swop shop is part of Ferreira’s incredible charity organisation, which he has run since 2013 after being diagnosed with Leukemia. He refused to let the diagnosis destroy his life; instead, he decided to spend the rest of his life dedicated to making the world a better place for the less fortunate.
“Shortly after my 28th birthday, I was diagnosed with a rare type of leukaemia, and one week later, my life turned into a shit storm of medical procedures, chemo, blood tests, side-effects, and I had a whole new outlook on life.”
“Although the type of leukaemia I have is officially considered an incurable disease, I decided from the very first day that I will not feel sorry for myself, and I will make the most of every single minute I have to leave a mark and to make the world a better place. The idea of death did not scare me, but I knew I wanted to leave behind something worth remembering before I officially kicked the bucket,” – Ferreira explains.
