South Africans love their biltong, but a dietitian just dropped a bombshell that has the nation shaking their heads in disapproval and clutching their snack bags in horror!
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 October 2025) – One thing about South Africans? They love their biltong! That’s why dietitian Jade Seeliger knew they wouldn’t be too happy with her when she shared a video on her social media, explaining how much biltong they should actually be having.
In her video, she poured almost a plateful of biltong, showing the difference between how much biltong the average South African typically eats versus how much they should be eating, as she displayed a much smaller amount on the same plate, weighing 30g.
“The amount we should be eating should pretty much be able to fit into a matchbox,” Jade explains.
“Here’s perspective, the 100g of biltong that you casually snack on would rehydrate to 250g of rump steak.”
She goes on to elaborate in her caption that biltong is pure protein power, but it’s sneaky with portions, because it’s light, tasty, and so easy to keep grabbing “just one more piece” – until half the bag is gone.
Jade advised her viewers to remember that the next time they find themselves mindlessly munching while the Bokke do their thing, they’re not just snacking, they’re tackling a whole steak — one strip at a time!

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, South Africans weren’t too impressed to learn they should go easy on one of their favourite snacks and naturally, took to the comments section to share their hilarious disapproval. (FYI – it’s just banter, lol).
“You eat as much as you can afford,” commented Susan Korff.
Ofishally Babich hilariously warned that people in white suits armed with a specially strapped gown were coming for the dietician.
“Big nope from me, 1kg will do,” said Freddie L Moritz.
“You measure a biltong portion with your heart. Not a matchbox,” added dumela_nz.
All in all, it was a good laugh, even if the lesson on portion control is one most biltong lovers aren’t quite ready to accept!
