Learning South African words might not be part of the official training, but the Australian Men’s netball squad gave it their best shot.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 January 2026) – Before taking to the court for the SPAR Challenge at Ellis Park Indoor Arena, the Australian Kelpies got a crash course in South African slang, and their guesses had everyone laughing.

Words like “Yebo”, “Chommie”, “Awe”, “Lekker”, “Eish”, “Braai”, “Haikhona”, and “Dintsang” might sound simple to a local, but for the visitors from Down Under, they proved to be a whole new language.

Their guesses ranged from “like you’re away from home” to “demon”, leaving fans in the comments laughing.

While the Kelpies are here to test their skills against the Proteas Men in the three-match curtain-raiser series, it’s clear that learning a little local flair is also on the agenda. Whether they nailed the meanings or not, their efforts highlight the fun side of international sport.
