This festive, feel-good community project spreads warmth in literally every sense of the word!
Mpumalanga, South Africa (27 October 2025) – Earlier this year, a mall in Secunda launched an ambitious community project to build an extra special Christmas tree. One made from 2750 donated granny squares. One that, after its life cycle as a Christmas tree, would turn into blankets for the needy.
The community loved the idea, and crocheters jumped at the chance to do something good.

By March, the project had already reached its halfway mark with over 1706 crochet squares collected. Each one made by a set of hands determined to spread the festive joy and do some good. Those who couldn’t crochet donated yarn towards those who could, and by the end of October, the project was complete.
Over 3000 squares were donated overall, with 2600 used to build a spectacular 6 metre tall Christmas tree that lights up in its own special way.
“Each square represents a piece of hope, kindness, and togetherness. This tree is not just a festive installation, it’s a symbol of what we can create when we come together,” shared the mall.

It’s an initiative we love. Sure, there’s a time and place for the very grand Christmas displays we’re used to seeing at malls, but there’s also a place for wholesome, community-based festive cheer that in the end, gives back.
The project will enter its second phase after the holiday season has passed, when the squares will be carefully transformed into blankets and donated to those in need.
“So your contribution will continue to bring warmth in every sense of the word. Thank you for taking heart and making a difference,” the mall shared, thanking their amazing community members for making it all happen.
