Recent reports of children tragically losing their lives after consuming snacks said to be purchased from spaza shops have deeply impacted Stephan, founder of Charity Begins With Me. These heartbreaking stories have moved him to re-evaluate his feeding scheme’s approach by taking on a massive challenge to promote healthier snacking alternatives.
Johannesburg, South Africa (09 January 2025) – With concerning reports of children losing their lives after consuming foods or snacks purchased from spaza shops (and other food handling facilities), the founder of Charity Begins With Me, Stephan, has been moved to reconsider his approach when it comes to his feeding scheme.
While the current feeding scheme provides vital nutrition and sustenance, evident in the long lines of eager families and children waiting to be served, Stephan has been moved to prioritise fresh fruits and vegetables.
After recently reading yet another article about a child’s passing, admittedly breaking his heart, Stephan believes healthier options offer a safer and more enjoyable snacking alternative for children in informal settlements.
“Children living in informal settlements need access to fresh fruit and veggies. Something they can eat without having to cook. Something they can take to school or eat when they get home,” Stephan explains.
His plan? To distribute about 750 fruits and vegetables a week and ultimately 40,000 this year to honour his upcoming 40th birthday. While it is a significant challenge, he is eager to take it on.
To support this worthy cause, promote healthier eating habits, and potentially save lives, visit the Charity Begins With Me Facebook page to learn more about how you can get involved.
