Whether you’re a binge-watcher, music lover, foodie or just looking for something new… the Friday Five has your weekend covered.
South Africa (13 September 2025) – Fridays have always had a kind of magic about them. They’re the bridge between a busy week and the promise of the weekend… and they deserve something special. That’s where the Friday Five comes in. Think of it as your go-to guide for all the good things I’ve been watching, reading, listening to, eating and experiencing. Movies, series, music, restaurants and even those random-but-awesome finds in between… it’s all here.
And before you panic: yes, sometimes The Friday Five arrives on a Saturday.
But here’s the deal: good things are worth waiting for.
This feature is one of my absolute favourites on Good Things Guy, because it’s my chance to share with you the bits and pieces of culture, entertainment and life that genuinely make me excited. You see, I often get invited to movie premieres, early screenings, or even events that feel like once-in-a-lifetime moments. This column is where I bring you along for the ride.
🎬 Movies that we need to talk about!
💖 K-Pop Demon Hunters
What do you get when you mash up the world’s biggest K-Pop girl group with supernatural demon hunting? Netflix’s biggest movie ever. That’s not an exaggeration. K-Pop Demon Hunters has already racked up over 236 million views, smashing records and climbing to the very top of Netflix history. And the soundtrack has also become an instant global sensation, with songs landing on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating streaming platforms everywhere.
Yes, I am late to the party. I only watched it last week… but I want to shout from the rooftops that you should too!
It’s an incredible movie but beyond the hype, what makes this animated musical stand out is its heart. At its core, it’s not about chasing monsters, it’s about facing the ones inside us. It’s about embracing flaws, finding strength in vulnerability and becoming who we were always meant to be. I loved that it didn’t shy away from those deeper truths while still giving us glitter, choreography and goosebump-worthy songs. It’s golden!
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now streaming on Netflix.
👹 The Conjuring: Last Rites
Few franchises have managed to grip audiences like The Conjuring. The first film was lightning in a bottle, a phenomenon that set the gold standard for modern horror. The Conjuring 2 was just as brilliant (in my opinion). The expanded universe (The Nun, Annabelle, even La Llorona) were all equally captivating.
So where does Last Rites land? Honestly, somewhere in the middle.
It’s marketed as the “final chapter,” but it feels more like a stepping stone to something else (no spoilers, but you’ll see what I mean). The scares are there, the atmosphere is chilling, and Ed and Lorraine Warren remain compelling characters, but it doesn’t quite carry the same punch as its predecessors.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐
Now showing in cinemas
📺 Series you need to see!!!
🚨 Task
Episode one and I’m already all in. Task drops us into the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, where we meet Tom Brandis at an FBI recruiting table while Robbie and Cliff, local garbage collectors, eye houses as potential robbery targets. Ten minutes in and you will realise this show has layers.
What grabbed me most was the depth of character development, even with just one episode. It feels raw, authentic, and full of potential to sprawl into something big. And the cherry on top is that Thuso Mbedu, our very own South African star, is in the cast. Of course we’re supporting this one. OBVS!!!!
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now streaming on HBO Max and Showmax
📰 The Paper
Imagine if “The Office” collided with print journalism and you’ll get The Paper. A documentary crew stumbles across a struggling Midwestern newspaper and follows its quirky publisher and volunteer reporters as they try to breathe new life into it.
It’s clever, funny in unexpected ways, and carries a subtle emotional weight about legacy, community and holding onto relevance in a world that moves way too fast. While not flawless, the performances and charm make it worth your time.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now streaming on Peacock (soon coming to DStv)
🎧 Music that you need to add to your playlist!
Right, let’s talk tunes. Because what’s a Friday without a playlist?
🎶 K-Pop Demon Hunters – Golden
I don’t know what sorcery they used but this track is dangerously addictive. Once you hear it, good luck getting it out of your head.
🎶 Sophie Ellis-Bextor – Stay on Me
If “Murder on the Dancefloor” was your jam, this is its darker, sassier cousin. It’s murder on the dancefloor, literally.
🎶 Calum Scott & Whitney Houston – I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Goosebumps. Every. Single. Time. This duet brings Whitney’s timeless voice back to life alongside Calum’s soaring delivery. It’s haunting and beautiful.
I’ve curated all of these (and a few extras) into a playlist on Apple Music. Sorry Spotify fam, I’m team Apple. But trust me, you’ll want this playlist on repeat.
🥩 Places to Go
Joburg has a new steakhouse.., and it is a VIBE! It’s called “On The Bone” and if you like steak, then you need to see this little eatery.
The second you walk in, you feel it, classy but still lekker cosy. And the steaks are next-level. Perfectly done, bursting with flavour, and plated with so much care.
Every bite left me smiling (and already planning my next visit). If you want a restaurant that nails the vibe, the service and the food… this is it.

One More Thing
Before I wrap this week’s Friday Five, I have to share something I’m really proud of. Good Things Guy has partnered with “Incredible” to bring the “My Incredible Business” campaign to life.
We’re shining a spotlight on South Africa’s small and medium-sized businesses… the innovators, the job creators and the dreamers. Incredible, as SA’s largest tech retailer, is helping SMEs with the tools they need to thrive. Through Incredible Business, they’re offering everything from laptops to printers, from the tech that keeps restaurants buzzing to the gear that helps family businesses level up.
AND one incredible SME will be rewarded with R50,000 in Incredible vouchers to help take their business to the next level!!!! That’s not just a prize, it’s an investment in possibility, in families and in South Africa’s future.
For more information, you can read about it here.

If there’s one thing to take into the weekend, it’s this: life is better when we choose to see the good, no matter how small it seems. Because the good is always there… and once you start looking for it, you’ll see it everywhere.
Happy Saturday “Friday Five” fam!
