Even animals require blood when they have operations and other medical procedures; this is how your dog can donate blood to save other dogs!
Cape Town, South Africa (22 July 2021) – Tygerberg Animal Hospital has a special blood bank for dogs, and they are asking for dog owners to help them get their stock up.
We always knew dogs were heroes, but we never imagined that they could become heroes for their fellow dogs. We often speak about blood donations and other forms of saving lives, such as bone marrow and organ donation. Learning that dogs are also eligible to donate, we just had to share the news.

We are looking for new blood donors in the Western Cape, and we would like to encourage you to phone us on

For your dog to qualify as a blood donor, he or she will need to fit the below criteria.
- 1-6 years of age.
- Be of a healthy weight for the breed.
- Be more than 25kg.
- Be healthy.
- Have up-to-date vaccinations, deworming and tick & flea treatments.
- Have a calm temperament.
- Not be on chronic medication.
- Not have had any previous blood transfusions.
