The Stellenbosch municipality is working to make a difference in the lives of the homeless people that live in their community by giving out coupons.

Stellenbosch, South Africa – Gearing up for the winter months to come, the Stellenbosch Municipality are taking active steps to protect the homeless within their community.

On the 15th of March, they are launching an innovative coupon system which will allow people to hand out coupons to the homeless they meet on the streets. These coupons can be redeemed for a warm blanket, a hot meal or a nights shelter.

They have teamed up with HeartFlow, Straatlig and the Stellenbosch Night Shelter to make the project a reality. HeartFlow has successfully been running a coupon programme for some time encouraging people to instead hand out coupons over money or food. Straatlig works with the homeless and destitute in Stellenbosch through mentorship, workshops and offers to counsel to those in need.

The Stellenbosch Night Shelter caters to the oldest and most impoverished in the community. They offer a safe space to those in need.

The new coupon system will allow people to give a hand up instead of a handout.

“Homelessness and the challenges that come with it, is not unique to our municipality and as Stellenbosch, we are serious about addressing this challenge with a practical and sustainable approach.

The campaign is built around an innovative coupon system where residents and visitors are encouraged to purchase a coupon which buys a homeless person a night in a shelter, a blanket or a warm plate of food.”

The campaign will change the lives of many and give others an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their community. More information about the campaign will follow so stay tuned about how to get involved.
