There’s been giggles, cheers, and a few happy squeals in KwaNgcolosi, where Lusana Crèche has transformed from an old building with cracked walls and few resources into a colourful hub of learning, play, and activity.

KwaNgcolosi, South Africa (27 October 2025) – In the quiet corner of KwaNgcolosi, the sound of happy little giggles is now the loudest, brightest tune, thanks to the stunning, colourful transformation of Lusana Crèche!

The early childhood development centre’s upgrades are part of Heart in Hands Food Bank’s focus project for 2025, which seeks to refurbish and build ECDs in underserved communities to inspire and uplift the future generation.

After months and months of hard work on the ground, it has been the most beautiful journey of this little crèche transforming into a colourful hub of learning, play, and activity.

The work is not even complete yet, but what was once two bare buildings with no play area already now boasts a stunning sensory play area, enrichment facilities and jungle gyms. The reading corner, kitchen and storeroom extensions have also been built, and a bright mural to attract attention and stimulate emotional responses like happiness and excitement, beautifully painted by artist Giffy.

In the most recent developments, the final phase of the refurbishment and upliftment project has seen teams tackle the ‘old building’ with their experience and expertise to stabilise foundations, strip, and fully renovate it, making this tired building ready for use by the little creche.

“We’re thrilled to share that the transformation of the Old Building at Lusana Creche is powering ahead beautifully! This building needed much TLC, like the underpinning of foundations, a completely new roof, rebuilding of walls and levelling. It has not been an easy task, but over the past few weeks, Elangeni Buildings has made remarkable progress,” shared Heart in Hands Food Bank Project Manager Kim Griffith Jones.

This week, the little ones were also surprised with new toy bikes and doughnuts from generous sponsors who have played a significant role in uplifting Lusana.

“Watching those tiny feet race around their bike track for the first time was pure magic. It’s days like these that fill our hearts and remind us what community is all about:  kindness, connection, and a little bit of sunshine.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the wonderful community support we’ve received for this build. We’re so grateful to every donor, partner, and supporter walking this journey with us. Together, we’re making magic happen,” thanked Kim.
