The day that encourages all of us to dedicate at least 67 minutes to acts of service or contribute to a stronger South Africa kicks off tomorrow! We’ve highlighted a few more charities that are inviting you to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

South Africa (17 July 2025) – Mandela Day is tomorrow, the day that calls on all South Africans to make a difference in their communities or the lives of others as part of honouring the legacy of uTata, a hero who led with heart and cared for all people, especially those in need.

Good Things Guy has been compiling lists of local charities that will be rolling out incredible initiatives to commemorate the day and extending an invite to the public to be a part of something great, even if it’s just for 67 minutes.

Here are a few more charities doing good things tomorrow:

1. Salesian Institute Youth Projects

This Mandela Day, the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) invites individuals, organisations, and community changemakers to spend just one hour in the true spirit of Ubuntu — giving their time and resources to help feed the less fortunate.

On 18 July, at 2 Somerset Road, Green Point, you can join celebrity chef Jenny Morris and the SIYP team in a hands-on, heart-driven soup and sandwich drive in support of Cape Town’s underserved communities.

Participants can choose an hour between 9am and 3pm and are encouraged to bring along: a knife and chopping board, fresh vegetables and non-perishables and a donation — monetary or in-kind donations — to support this meaningful cause.

2. Grow ECD

Grow ECD equips Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres with skills and resources for high-quality early learning. This year, consider supporting them by donating preschool tables, chairs, carpets, mattresses, or outdoor play equipment like scooters and soft balls.

Everyday essentials that can reduce the operating costs of the centres and improve health, hygiene and education, such as detergents, toilet paper, wet wipes, art and craft supplies, age-appropriate books for 0-5-year-olds (in decent condition and local languages) and toys will also be appreciated.

3. SA Harvest

SA Harvest is calling on South Africans to take part in a campaign that champions dignity, justice, and youth empowerment, one bucket at a time.

The 2025 Buckets of Nutrition for Matriculants campaign is a powerful public-facing initiative focused on equipping Grade 12 learners in underserved communities with the essentials they need to face their final school year with hope and resilience.

Each curated bucket includes shelf-stable nutritious food, hygiene items, and basic stationery—small but significant tools to restore dignity and support academic success.

You can sponsor a bucket for R500, join a packing event at Melrose Arch or Pavilion Mall on 18 July, or partner with SA Harvest for in-house activations or logistics support.

Donations can be made at https://saharvest.org/buckets/, using the reference “Buckets”.

4. Nelson Mandela University

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day, NMU’s Department of Building and Human Settlement Development is leading a community upliftment initiative on 18 July 2025, from 10am to 2pm, at Lukhanyiso Daycare, located at 23116 NU 12B, Motherwell.

The aim is to create a safer and more inspiring learning environment for children by repainting the centre, maintaining outdoor spaces, and repairing playground equipment, contributing to sustainable, community-centred development in underserved areas.

Feel free to contact snekhaya.gama@mandela.ac.za for more information.

5. Woodrock Animal Rescue

The Woodrock Animal Rescue invites you to tie a ribbon on its Tree of Hope for just R67 on 18 and 19 July at the shelter between 9am and 3pm, a simple gesture that speaks volumes in the spirit of Ubuntu.

Whether you volunteer, donate, visit, or simply spread the word, whatever way you give back, it all counts and helps make a difference that truly matters!
