This past World Prematurity Day came with an abundance of woolly goodies as Beanies for Beings collected several beanies, booties, blankets and bonding squares to deliver much-needed warmth and comfort to preterm babies in public hospitals across the country.
Northriding, South Africa (18 November 2025) – Observed every year on 17 November, World Prematurity Day shines a vital light on the millions of little lives that begin their journey fighting to survive.
It is a reminder of the challenging reality so many families face behind closed doors and in neonatal wards globally. Each year, countless infants embark on this incredibly difficult path, entering the world too soon, their tiny bodies relying on advanced medical care, resilience and warmth.
In honour of these tiny fighters and in support of a wonderful organisation, Beanies4Babies, which helps bring them comfort and warmth, Beanies for Beings was able to donate 62 beanie and bootie sets, 196 beanies, 35 pairs of booties and 46 sets of bonding squares lovingly made by its volunteer knitters and crocheters.
Sixteen sets of bonding squares and 18 Octopi, also lovingly made by the SJP Yarners in honour of the Baby Gabriella Project, were also donated and dropped off at the Beanies4Babies drop-off point yesterday.
Beanies4Babies is a non-profit organisation that strives to fight hypothermia (core body temperature lower than 36.5 C) in all low-birth-weight babies (less than 2.5 kg) born in the public health sector of South Africa.
The charity achieves this by supplying beanies and socks to as many public hospitals and clinics as possible so that these items can be given to these babies directly after birth.
World Prematurity Day serves as one of the most significant days to champion this worthy cause. SA knitters certainly stitched and showed up towards an initiative that supports the extraordinary resilience of little warriors, who, from their very first breath, demonstrate an inspiring will to live.
“Blessed and grateful thanks to everyone who contributed towards this, helping to save the lives of many premature babies,” thanked Beanies for Beings.
