A group of police officers went above and beyond their traditional role to serve their community by shaving their heads and spraying their hair with vibrant colours as a bold, visual statement of support for the thousands of patients who lose their hair during their toughest battles.

Alexandria, South Africa (27 October 2025) – In a touching display of serving the community beyond the call of duty, police officers took a moment to put their tools down to stand in solidarity with cancer warriors and survivors.

Police officers who were more than keen to embrace a heartfelt challenge and switch up their looks took part in a shavathon event held in Alexandria. During this event, many of our brave men and women in blue shaved their heads or sprayed their hair with funky colours to show support for the thousands of patients who often lose their hair during their toughest battles.

According to SAPS, the event was held at the Dutch Reformed Church, Voortrekker Street in Alexandria on Wednesday, 22 October, where many people came out to support the significant cause that offers a glimmer of hope and raises vital funds for countless patients in their hour of need.

“Members were also joined by several stakeholders, including the local Community Police Forum (CPF), coming together to make a bold statement against the dreaded diseases. The proceeds that were collected on the day were donated to PALCARE,” SAPS said.

PALCARE is a local non-profit organisation that provides home-based hospice and palliative care to those with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses in Grahamstown and Sunshine Coast Communities and surroundings.

SAPS Brigadier Asogran Naidoo praised members for participating in the event, saying:

“Your role in the event highlighted compassion and dedication to serving the communities beyond traditional policing. This event highlights the ongoing efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to strengthen community-police relations and to promote a ‘community-first’ approach to policing.”
