Afrika Tikkun is making school travel safer for South African children. Through its Discovery Safe Journeys to School (DSJTS) initiative, the organisation has taken proactive steps to ensure learner safety.

Western Cape, South Africa (28 January 2025) – This year, more parents will feel relieved knowing their children are in safe hands while travelling to and from school. This assurance comes from Afrika Tikkun’s innovative and proactive approach to enhancing school travel safety for learners across South Africa.

In preparation for the 2025 school year, the non-profit organisation spearheaded its Discovery Safe Journeys to School (DSJTS) initiative by ensuring teams were on the ground in Ashton and George to improve transport services and ensure that drivers were well-prepared for the many young scholars returning to school.

In Ashton, tracking devices were successfully installed in 43 scholar transport buses, enhancing safety and accountability. While in George, 18 new drivers completed defensive driving and first aid training, equipping them with essential skills to prioritise learner safety.

Afrika Tikkun focuses on wraparound development solutions when it comes to supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through education, health, nutrition, personal development and skills development the organisation empowers our young people to become self-confident and capable adults. A crucial part of achieving this is making sure they are transported safely on our roads from point A to B.

“At DSJTS, improving road safety and reducing incidents remains our top priority.

“With the well-being of learners at the heart of everything we do, we are excited to begin this academic year by working together to make a meaningful impact,” Afrika Tikkun said.

Here’s to safer and more reliable journeys for our future leaders and changemakers!
