Earlier this year, The Oyster Box lost its most famous resident, Skabenga the cat. Now, a life-size bronze statue made in his memory has been revealed, along with the lovable tabby’s last wishes…

Umhlanga, South Africa (23 October 2025) – Skabenga arrived at the famous red and white hotel many moons ago.

He decided then and there that he quite liked the place, and so he never left. From that moment on, he ruled over The Oyster Box with the ease of a king who knew exactly how much he was loved.

True to his name (which means ‘vagabond’ or ‘hooligan’ in Zulu), he lived life on his own terms, sneaking treats, lounging in sunny spots, and soaking up endless love from guests around the world.

Over time, he became a legend. People followed him on social media, shared stories of his antics, and snapped paparazzi shots of him sprawled across his chosen spots in the hotel. A proper mascot he was.

When he passed away in March at the age of 19, the outpouring of love was so great that the team wanted to honour him in a way that would last forever.

This week, they unveiled the most beautiful way they’re keeping the memory of Skabenga alive.

The hotel commissioned a life-size bronze statue of their beloved late kitty from KwaZulu-Natal sculptor Sarah Richards. She’s renowned for her finely detailed wildlife work. From her Midlands studio, Richards teamed up with the staff who knew Skabenga best to capture his full character.

Then came the task of finding the best way to mount and display the work of art securely in one of the hotel’s busy public spaces. The solution came from one of Skabenga’s dedicated carers, who suggested using the collection of collars he had lovingly received from fans over the years. These were incorporated into the base with help from resin artist Erica van Eck.

The hotel hosted a special high tea to unveil the statue, as well as the pampered kitty’s very last wishes, this week. Just as Skabenga brought love to countless guests who got to meet him, his memory will do the same for needy animals who have not had the luck of calling a luxury hotel their home.

Attached to the base of Skabenga’s new bronze statue is a QR code that lets visitors donate directly to the Durban & Coast SPCA. Fitting last wishes for a cat who only ever brought joy to his human admirers.

“Today, we proudly unveil Skabenga’s statue as a lasting symbol of the special place he holds in so many hearts,” says Philisiwe Gumede, general manager of The Oyster Box.
