A bold SPCA message challenges public perceptions around adoption fees, while unpacking the real cost of animal care and the growing crisis of abandoned pets.

Vereeniging, South Africa (01 April 2026) – A bold message from the SPCA is getting people talking (and thinking) about what it really takes to care for and rehome animals. And it’s not as easy as people would think.

At first glance, the idea sounds simple: remove adoption fees and make it easier for animals to find homes. The organisation even suggests that potential adopters could take an animal home at no upfront cost, with only veterinary procedures like sterilisation, vaccinations and microchipping to be arranged and paid for directly with a vet.

But that’s where the message takes a turn.

The SPCA uses this scenario to highlight an important reality. And that’s the often-criticised adoption fee, usually around R1100, already covers all of those essential procedures. When compared to private veterinary costs, that fee suddenly looks far more reasonable.

Beyond the numbers, the organisation is also addressing growing criticism it has faced in recent weeks, including accusations around costs and difficult decisions made at shelters. According to the SPCA, these challenges are rooted in the overwhelming number of unwanted and abandoned animals.

Each year, thousands of animals are taken in, far exceeding the available space and resources. With limited kennels and no government funding, difficult decisions sometimes have to be made to prevent suffering.

The message also turns the spotlight back onto the public, raising tough but necessary questions about responsibility. From unsterilised pets to abandoned animals, the SPCA says many of the challenges begin long before animals arrive at their doors.

So at its core, the campaign is less about removing fees and more about shifting perspective. It’s a call to adopt, support, and get involved.
