‘May these dreams take root, grow strong and flourish in the years to come.’
Stellenbosch, South Africa (30 January 2026) – It’s the most exciting time of year for students across the country! At Stellenbosch University, newcomers have just concluded their annual welcoming ceremony.
A beloved part of the ceremony is the Dream Walk down Victoria Street. The tradition sees first-year students, student leaders, faculty and town stakeholders take to the central artery of the town in a walk that symbolises the first step of the student journey.
Even the trees play a role in the student inauguration…
Stellenbosch is often called the ‘City of Oaks’ due to the old oak trees that traditionally line many of its streets. In keeping with the tradition, students were invited to write down their dreams for 2026 and reflect on the meaning of their student experience. Each of these written cards was then placed on a tree.
“Hopes, ambitions and dreams: written down, shared and hung on the trees along Victoria Street,” shared Stellenbosch University. “May these dreams take root, grow strong and flourish in the years to come.”
Another special tradition upheld at the university is the conclusion of the welcoming ceremony, where, this year, over 6000 new students and faculty gathered on the campus rugby field in formation of the current year. The photo-op symbolises the excitement of the year ahead.
“This is one of our most loved traditions. From above, the iconic aerial photo captures the energy, excitement and pride of this moment.”
In his first welcoming address as Vice-Chancellor and Rector of Stellenbosch University, Prof Deresh Ramjugernath shared the most important message. One of acceptance.
“This is a university where ALL are welcome,” he said. “Let me start with something I want you to hear clearly, from the very first day you arrive here: You belong here. Not some of you. Not only the people who already know the campus, the system, or the ‘rules’. All of you. Whether you come from a big city or a small town. Whether you are the first person in your family to attend university, or from generations of academics. Whether you arrived feeling confident… or quietly terrified. Whether you already know exactly what you want to become, or you’re still figuring it out. This university is a space where all are welcome.”
