Heritage Day 2025 is shaping up to be one for the history books because Castle Lager and Big Save are teaming up to host the World’s Biggest Braai.

South Africa (29 June 2025) – South Africans are pretty serious about a few things: rugby, road trips, and a proper braai. But what if we told you that we don’t hold the Guinness World Record for the biggest braai ever?

Ja, you just read that correctly. Jaw, meet floor.

That honour belongs to Uruguay.

Back in 2017, the South American nation pulled off a record-breaking asado (their version of our proudly South African braai) in the city of Minas. They grilled a whopping 16.5 tonnes of beef on a 1,500-metre-long grill, using 60 tonnes of wood. It was massive. So massive, in fact, that it earned them the Guinness World Record for the largest barbecue ever held.

And while we love a good global celebration of grilled meat… that just doesn’t sit right with us.

Luckily, Castle Lager, South Africa’s 130-year-old beer icon, isn’t letting it go. They’ve teamed up with Big Save to cook up something colossal: The World’s Biggest Braai, set to take place this Heritage Day, 24 September 2025.

“South Africa is on a run of victories – from favourites to underdogs, we continue to achieve at the highest level, globally. The record for the World’s Biggest Braai currently eludes Mzansi, and that’s why Castle Lager and Big Save have combined to invite you to join in on the Heritage Day celebrations,” says Thomas Lawrence, Brand Director for Castle Lager.

To get the fire started (literally), Castle Lager launched an actual braai built into a billboard, aptly named the Grillboard, right on Vilakazi Street in Soweto. It’s street-level marketing with sizzle. Passers-by could smell the boerie before they saw the billboard and the activation went from bus stop curiosity to national buzz in just a few hours.

“In a campaign that blends culture and community,” Lawrence explains, “Castle Lager has used its innovative Grillboard – a billboard with a built-in braai – to launch a street-level activation invitation that’s sparking conversations, media buzz, and real-world impact.”

We love this campaign. And are backing it fullheartedly. And you can too!

Sign up to be part of the movement, help make braai history and show the world how we do things in Mzansi.
