After taking an almost 7-year break from music, Rihanna lit up the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show last night singing all her famous hits.
Global (13 February 2023) – The global superstar performed well-known hits like “Umbrella,” “Where Have You Been,” “Only Girl in the World” and “Wild Thoughts,” and also showed off her new pregnant belly to the world. Following her performance, a representative for Rihanna confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she is pregnant.
Rihanna and “A$AP Rocky” welcomed their first child to the world just 9 months ago, and now the world knows that there’s another little one on the way!
In an interview, the Grammy winner said she first thought twice about performing at the Super Bowl, but motherhood ultimately inspired her to perform at the big game.
“When you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world — you can do anything,” she added. “And the Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world, so as scary as that was … there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all,” she said.
Halftime shows are a tradition during American football games at all levels of competition. Entertainment during the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), represents a fundamental link to pop culture, which helps broaden the television audience and nationwide interest.
Prior to the early 1990s, the halftime show featured university marching bands (the Grambling State University Marching Band has performed at the most Super Bowl halftime shows, featuring in six shows including at least one per decade from the 1960s to 1990), drill teams, and other performance ensembles such as Up with People. In the 90s, the halftime show began to feature major hit musicians, beginning with Super Bowl XXV (1991) with New Kids on the Block. In an effort to boost the prominence of the halftime show to increase viewer interest, Super Bowl XXVII (1993) featured a headlining performance by Michael Jackson.
And this year Rihanna “killed” it. Watch the performance below:
