Two Swellendam SPCA staff members volunteered to stay behind at the shelter overnight and keep the animals safe during recent protesting.

Swellendam, South Africa (17 August 2023) – What started as a peaceful protest in the community of Swellendam quickly turned violent after protesters were told their march was illegal. The municipal office where the protestors memorandum was due to be handed over, was burned down. In all the anger and danger, two heroes emerged.

The Swellendam SPCA shared that two of their staff, names omitted, volunteered to stay behind at the shelter to keep the animals calm and to offer a level of protection should the protesters target the SPCA.

The protesting was close to the building but thankfully, the violence didn’t spill over to the SPCA. The two volunteers made up beds using donated wooden pallets and prepared for two nights.

The SPCA shared the news via their Facebook page and followers have been showering the volunteers with kindness and support for their good deed.

“When the going gets tough, the Tough gets going.

Last night was an intense night in the vicinity of our kennels. Shops were set ablaze, shots were fired, people got hurt.

But 2 of our brave staff have braced two nights and slept at the kennels, making sure our furries are okay. (Thank you to Nexus Swellendam for those new pallets! They make perfect beds for humans too.đŸ˜†đŸ„°)

Everyone survived last night, are looked after and well.

Let’s hope today is a better day.”
