Part of Alexandra has been gutted by a fire, leaving many without homes in the middle of winter and exposed to a fast-spreading virus.
Johannesburg, South Africa (03 July 2020) – Last night, at 19:41 my phone pinged with a message from the Angel Network. They were notified of a fire in Johannesburg’s township Alexandra (Alex for short). We were notified that 200 shacks were burned to the ground, leaving 1000 people homeless.
The Angel Network started a collection drive, asking people to please drop off donations today, between 10 am and 2 pm. It has been 1 hour since the first donation was dropped off and within the hour, thousands of blankets have been dropped off, bags filled with clothing and groceries.
Individuals and businesses came together and have completely blown away the organisers of the donation drive! When we got the message a few minutes ago, seeing the video showing the piles of donations, we couldn’t help but cry!
“The Angel Network has just been notified of a devastating fire in Alex that destroyed over 200 shacks and left 1000 plus people homeless. We are desperate to get them fed, clothed and reestablished ASAP.
We need blankets, bedding, pots and pans, clothing, non-perishable food.”
Please contact Glynne from the Angel Network on 083 777 1621 to arrange a drop-off time. Take a look at all the donations received within the first hour of collections. If you would like to follow the story, you can find out more via their Facebook page here.
