Barbers in Cape Town will unite to raise funds for the children’s radio station at the Red Cross Hospital as led by a proud barber and father of one of the young presenters!

Cape Town, South Africa (07 August 2024) — Barbershop owner Adiel Salie is calling on barbers across Cape Town to put their blades to the test for a cause worth far more than even the best hair day. While the event is set to be a fun-fuelled competition for barbers, it’s mostly a way to raise much-needed funds for a beloved children’s radio station—RX Radio!

Adiel Salie isn’t just the owner of Gentspride Barber; he’s also a proud father to RX Radio reporter Kauthar Salie.

The child-led radio station based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital came into both their lives when Kauthar was admitted to the hospital at the tender age of 7 for Nephrotic Syndrome and a Kidney transplant. Despite an unsuccessful transplant that has resulted in her being put on dialysis, she has found great joy in being one of the first children to pilot the children’s radio station—a place for children to raise their voices and follow their passions.

Since the pandemic, RX Radio Station is said to have faced tough times and many challenges. But, the community supporting these young reporters has pulled together time and time again, and this time, Adiel is hoping barbers will be at the forefront.

With 20 years of experience in the industry, Adiel is no stranger to the fact that barbers often won’t shy away from showing of their skills. His event, #BladesOfHonourForRXRadio invites barbers to do exactly that and compete in different categories, namely: Street Style, Best Colour, Patterns, Fastest Fade, Speed and Precision, with a R300 entry fee per category.

“Whoever is out there and would like to assist the child reporters at RX Radio (since the station is mainly for them and how their lives are impacted), please reach out and help us make this a day to remember,” says Salie.

The big goal is to raise R100,000 for the children’s radio station.
