Christopher Venter aka The Blind Scooter Guy needs South Africa’s help to win the Holman Prize for Blind Ambition which will help him travel across Europe.
The Blind Scooter Guy, Christopher is campaigning to win the #HolmanPrize. The Holman Prize is a reward gifted to three blind recipients to be used to go on grand adventures and to explore the world around them in different and exciting ways.
The prize is for Blind Ambition. It is provided by LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
“The Holman Prize is not meant to save the world or congratulate someone for leaving the house,” says LightHouse CEO Bryan Bashin, “This prize will spark unanticipated accomplishments. You will see blind people doing things that surprise and perhaps even confuse you.”
Christopher lost his eyesight three years ago due to a virus that attacked his Retina and left him completely blind. He was in the middle of a 20 000 mile expedition from Cape Town to Dublin, Ireland raising money for a local children’s hospital.
Refusing to let the loss of his sight affect his life, Christopher started the blog ‘Blind Scooter Guy’.
On it he discusses his thoughts about life and living as a blind adventurer. He also showcases the difficulties a blind person encounters on a daily basis, from online shopping to visiting places such as the Aquarium. He was one of the speakers at the Tedx Cape Town.
You can view his amazing and inspirational Ted Talk here.
If Christopher wins the Holman Prize, he will use his winnings to Travel Europe and part of the route that James Holman, a famous blind adventurer who lived and traveled between the 1780’s and 1860’s, traveled. He will also use that experience as well as his every day experiences to write and publish a book about his sightless adventure.
“During my expedition I will visit sight loss support groups and share my Mantra, “In an accessible world a #BlindManCan do anything that a sighted person is able to.”
Christopher needs our help to follow this new adventure. The best way to do that is to get people talking about him and his video.
You can watch his Youtube video below, be sure to like the video and share it has much as possible! The Holman Prize selects semifinalists from the pool of applicants and notifies them by the end of March. So lets get the Blind Scooter Guy to the next round.
