The community of Camps Bay Primary has endless appreciation for their secretary, Ms Rene. To them, she is a source of care and comfort. Her light has wiped away tears, walked alongside parents and welcomed every new pupil to school with care.
Cape Town, South Africa (30 October 2025) – Now, that same community around Camps Bay Primary is holding Ms Rene up, as she fights her bravest battle against breast cancer.
It’s aggressive and fast-moving. Shortly after her diagnosis in October, she started the first of eight tough rounds of chemotherapy, which she will undergo every 21 days, followed by surgery and radiation.
Without medical aid, the financial burden is immense and so is the emotional toll of suddenly becoming a cancer fighter. But Ms Rene not alone in that ring, the community’s rallying to back her.
Her friends and colleagues have started a BackaBuddy campaign to help pave the way forward financially, as she focuses on fighting this immeasurably tough and sudden battle.
A goal of R180,000 was set to cover medical costs. In less than a week, 50% of that has already been raised. There’s a way to go, but the support has already eased the struggle in what is still a long road ahead.
“As she faces cancer and goes through chemo, we have a chance to give back to her the way she’s always given to us. Whether you can give a little or share the word, it all helps show Ren how much she means to us,” the campaign reads.
Parents, colleagues and past pupils have all chipped in to show her that love and hope are on her side. Isn’t that the most beautiful thing? In a dark chapter, the light she once shared with others is finding its way back.
