Father and son, Wesley and Reece Smith, have been recognised and awarded for quietly yet profoundly breaking down barriers in the small seaside town of Amanzimtoti, where they are ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the sheer joy of the beach!
Amanzimtoti, South Africa (22 June 2025) – Congratulations are in order for the father-and-son duo, Wesley and Reece Smith, who are breaking down barriers and creating a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of the beach!
Through their community-driven project, Wheels on Waves, Wesley and Reece have brought palpable joy, offering many disabled individuals the priceless experience of feeling beach sand between their toes, the sun kissing their skin, and the waves crashing around them, for some, a truly amazing first-time experience.
This past week, they were presented with a Durban Tourism Business Award for making Amanzimtoti Beach universally accessible in the Universal Accessibility/Sustainable Tourism Category.
The award comes as a well-deserved recognition for their continued efforts in not just championing accessibility but making it fun too!
Still relishing the incredible moment, Reece, with true zest for life, told Good Things Guy that although he and his father were aware they had been nominated, they were surprised to have actually walked away as winners.
“The Durban Tourism awards were absolutely incredible. We were nominated, and we didn’t really expect to win, even though we hoped we would. We are super delighted,” Reece shares.
Reece hopes that this recognition and achievement will help shine an even brighter a spotlight on what Wheels on Waves is doing in Amanzimtoti Beach and attract more people living with disabilities to sign up for an unforgettable experience of one of nature’s most loved gems.
“We hope that disabled people will know that they have a beach where they are catered for.
“All they have to do is contact us on our social media or email and inform us about their disability, what they can or cannot do and most importantly, what they want to do – and we’ll make it happen. That’s what we aspire to do at Wheels on Waves,” Reece adds.
