The Groote Schuur Hospital turned 85 years old at the end of January; the Heroes of Groote Schuur Facebook page spoke to staff who joined in the celebrations.
Cape Town, South Africa (01 February 2023) – The Groote Schuur Academic Hospital in Cape Town celebrated 85 years on the 31st of January and during the celebrations, the Heroes of Groote Schuur interviewed staff to see how they felt about the big day.
The incredible Facebook page, Heroes of Groote Schuur, which highlights some of the best stories from staff and the hospital, shared the happy post from the celebration and we loved the answers given.
“Today, under a beautiful clear Cape Town sky, Groote Schuur staff filled Palm Court as the hospital celebrated its 85th birthday.
There was music, there was singing, there were dance competitions, there were goodbyes and general celebrations to mark another milestone in Groote Schuur’s history.
“I’m immensely proud of working here,” said Wynette King, an operational manager in Nursing. “It’s a world-renowned hospital. When people know you are working here, you’re already on the map.”
“I’ve been here for 27 years. I went into retirement, but had to come back because this is home,” added nurse Maghboeba Fortune.
Among those enjoying the festivities was Aariefa Philand, who has only just started working at the hospital, at the brand-new in-house beauty salon. “I’m really enjoying my time here so far,” she said. “Everyone is really friendly and I can tell I’m going to like being here.”
And there was also a special word for Charmaine Brooks, who is retiring as a Senior Admin Clerk after 29 years of service. “I’m looking forward to having a change,” she said. “But the friendships I’ve made here are for a lifetime.”
The celebration included music for the staff and a big celebration that left everyone is high spirits!
