‘There have been moments of deep fear and uncertainty – but in those moments, your love has been our anchor.’

Cape Town, South Africa (03 February 2026) – Those are words of gratitude from a man who is fighting the toughest battle imaginable.

The cancer had already taken its toll on his body when he received the diagnosis in October last year. With no warning signs beforehand, 54-year-old biology professor Lester Davids was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, with widespread metastases. It was devastating news for him and his young family.

Lester has one of South Africa’s greatest minds. He holds a PhD in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Cape Town.

“For those who know him, Lester Davids is much more than a respected academic. He is a teacher, mentor, consultant, advisor, and friend to countless students, colleagues, and businesses. His life’s purpose has always been centered on building others up — coaching, guiding, and inspiring people to reach their potential. His influence has stretched far beyond the classroom, touching lives through his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to others.” reads a crowdfunding campaign created to support Dr Davids.

But at the centre of Lester’s universe is his family.

“Family time has always been Lester’s greatest source of joy and strength. Moments spent laughing, learning, and simply being together have been the foundation of their lives. Now, this devoted husband, father, and mentor faces the biggest fight of his life.”

There is hope shining through their darkest chapter…

Lester’s cancer cells tested highly positive for the PDL-1 protein, which makes him a candidate for a combined treatment of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, the combination of which offers the best chance of slowing the disease and extending his life in a meaningful way.

While medical aid will cover chemotherapy, immunotherapy hasn’t been approved, leaving a significant financial gap. That reality prompted friends and family to launch a campaign on BackaBuddy, where an amazing show of support is currently happening.

So far, more than 100 donors have contributed, helping raise over R340,000. That’s almost 15% of the total needed for Lester’s treatment.

“The costs remain substantial although the current round [of treatment] has been reduced to R62 000 per treatment every three weeks. This treatment is vital to Lester’s fight against cancer,” the family shared in an update.

Lester spoke about the life-changing support his family has already received.

“How does one possibly thank an entire community—from the very depths of their heart—for carrying us through a journey that has, at times, felt impossible to endure? This is my humble attempt,” he shared.

“…I have read every single message—again and again—and more often than not, through tears. Every prayer lifted, every word of encouragement spoken, every act of generosity given has wrapped itself around my heart and my family in ways I will never be able to fully express. None of it has gone unnoticed. All of it will be forever treasured.” he added.

South Africans are coming together to give this dad, mentor and educator more hope and more tomorrows.
