Rubi Nates is a 10 year old with a giving heart, she started collecting shoes for the needy and now hopes collecting books will inspire the magic of reading.
There is no denying that children are the future. It is so exciting to see young souls working hard to make South Africa a better place. 10 year old Rubi was inspired by 9 year old Dario Gouveia, who started the Sole2Sole shoe collections.
As a grade 4 student at Herzlia Constantia, Rubi first thought she would help after seeing the story we wrote about Dario. Rubi and her mother started collecting shoes for the people in need in Cape Town. Since she started, Rubi has collected over 3500 shoes.
“We were very fortunate with our shoe Drive to get all the Barksole branches on board who donated their old shoes which have not been collected by customers. They also offered to be a collection point for donations which was a huge help.” – Janene Nates, Rubi’s mother.
Rubi’s charitable heart has created a huge change in the lives of many. She recently saw the plea for books after the devastating Knysna Fires and quickly started collecting books. The new collection drive is one of her favourites as she hopes to share the magic of reading with others.
” We have collected 1400 (books) with almost every one having been donated to extremely grateful recipients.”
The books are being used to fill small libraries and going to children who have never owned their own books. To find out more about the book drive, check out their Facebook Page here.
We know that Rubi is going to do really well with her book drive, she has a passion for making a difference. We cannot see what her future holds!
