According to sources, Justin Harvey is the first South African to ever receive honorary citizenship from Seoul.
Seoul, South Korea (02 December 2021) – Justin Harvey, a TV personality from South Africa, became an honorary citizen of Seoul on Wednesday with eight other foreign nationals in acknowledgement of their contributions to the city.
In September, Harvey was walking along the Han River with his parents – who were visiting him – when he saw what appeared to be a suicide attempt.
“He immediately threw himself into the water and rescued the drowning person.”
The Seoul Metropolitan Government officially recognized his act of bravery on Wednesday, which conferred honorary citizenship upon him and eight other foreigners here.
During the ceremony, nine recipients from eight different countries were awarded the honour by Mayor Oh Se-hoon in recognition of their contributions to the local community in the economic, cultural and tourism sectors.
Since launching the award in 1958, the Seoul city government has granted honorary citizenship to a total of 891 foreign nationals. According to sources, Harvey is the first South African to ever receive honorary citizenship from Seoul and can be counted along with Jackie Chan who also received this award.
