Gift of the Givers has been on the ground in Cape Town where Khayelitsha and Philippi communities have lost everything in recent fires.

Khayelitsha, South Africa (09 January 2023) – The communities of Khayelitsha and Philippi have been left devastated after several fires burned hundreds of homes. According to reports, the Cape Town community has been plagued by six fires in just one week. Gift of the Givers has been assisting the various neighbourhoods since.

For many families, their homes contained all their wordly possessions. Worst of all, many spent their social grant money over the last few days, purchasing new school supplies for their children and food for the home. Now that everything has been lost, the families are struggling to put the pieces back together.

Thankfully, Gift of the Givers always answers the call to help. The team has been on the ground at the various fires and provided aid where needed. They have secured sponsors of essential items and are conducting assessments on the sites to see how best to support the community.

“Our teams have been on-site distributing 5lt bottled water, toiletry packs and nappies sponsored by Makro, TFG blankets and hot meals to the community.”

The answer to solving these fires is simple; better housing. The Gift of the Givers feel the frustration and anguish of these communities.

“This is the reality of fires in informal settlements, communities entire possessions, saved over the years, are destroyed in minutes. We are witnesses to this anguish over and over again. Twenty eight years into the new dispensation, it’s unfathomable that there is no implementation of a programme that guarantees dignified and decent living.” – Gift of the Givers
