A gorgeous fresco of Nelson Mandela has gone up in France; the work of Artiste RAST who captured Madiba in brilliant detail and vibrance. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it is also said to be the largest mural of Mandela!

France (30 May 2024) — While South Africans wait with bated breath to hear the results of yesterday’s elections (we’re still in for a bit of counting), a reminder of the man who symbolises our democracy has taken up space gorgeously thanks to a new fresco painting that has gone up in France.

In villedecreteil, Nelson Mandela beams in epic proportion at a height of a whopping 44 meters. Not only is the fresco the sum of talent and breathtaking detail, it is also reportedly the largest mural of Madiba in the world as the Embassy of France in South Africa share.

The Mandela Fresco was created by French street artist, Artiste RAST, who is no stranger to larger-than-life works of art. Underpinned by a unique style that amplifies textures alongside bold colour play, Artiste RAST has a knack for capturing the beauty of maturer faces; celebrating cultures from around the world.

“This monumental fresco not only adds beauty to our surroundings but also serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of Mandela’s message of unity and equality,” remarked the Embassy of France’s France in South Africa.

This sentiment is on the minds of many in our country more so than ever given the historic 30 years of democracy South Africa is celebrating. And, seeing our icon continue take up important spaces in other parts of the world reminds us all that his messages are both as relevant as ever, and just as powerful!
