Melusi Tshabalala has been using his Facebook account to teach isiZulu and now he is offering a free 10-week course to learn the fundamentals of the language.
Johannesburg, South Africa (07 February 2021) – Melusi Tshabalala started something in 2017 that we didn’t know we needed and he is now offering his 10-week isiZulu course for free!
Duduza. Bopha. Imbiza. Phapha. Asixoliseni. Amapopeye… what is the power of a single word?
Six days a week, advertising creative Melusi Tshabalala posts a Zulu word on his Everyday Zulu Facebook page and tells a story about it. His off-beat sense of humour, razor-sharp social observations and frank political commentary not only teaches his followers isiZulu but also offer insight into the world Melusi inhabits as a 21st century Zulu man.
Over the past few months, he has built up a big and a loyal following that includes radio host Jenny Crwys-Williams and Afrikaans author Marita van der Vyfer. He pokes fun at our differences and makes us laugh at ourselves and each other. Melusi asks critical questions of everyone, from Aunty Helen, Dudu-Zille to Silili (Cyril Ramaphosa) and even Woolworths (why are their aircons always set on ‘jou moer’?) His fans love him for his honesty and commitment to pointing out subtle and overt forms of prejudice and racism.
Since starting that page, Melusi has written several books, started a podcast and created an online course where South Africans can get an introduction to isiZulu.
“Delivered in a fun and engaging manner, the beginner course introduces the student to the basics and fundamentals of isiZulu. Having completed the course, the student will be equipped to better speak, read and write isiZulu. The course consists of 10 classes, with a new lesson uploaded each week. Students can enrol anytime and be able to access current and previous classes.”
And as of yesterday, Melusi has made the course absolutely free!
“By the way, I have made the Everyday Zulu lessons free. Most people are having a bit of a shit time so this is me, doing my bit.”
