Nickey Segar was moved to tears when she saw her crowdfund for Nellie Khuzwayo had been fully funded and has now gone over towards her tertiary education too!

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 January 2022) – Two days ago, we shared the story of Nickey Seger, who planned to run 14 half-marathons to raise funds for an exceptional young lady’s matric year. The story moved so many people that the crowdfund has been fully funded and beyond in just a few days.

Nickey Seger met Goodwill Khuzwayo in 2005 at work. Goodwill had been in a taxi accident, which left him disabled, but he was a dedicated husband and father, doing everything he could to take care of his family.

Moved by Goodwill’s dedication, Nickey started writing into the then Radio 94.7 ‘947 Xmas Wish’ to get him the help he needed. She wrote every year for three years before her letter was chosen. Goodwill got his ‘947 Xmas Wish’ granted; he wanted to send his daughter to a private school.

Nellie Khuzwayo was sent to a private school in Cosmo City for her grade 2 year. She loved it, but sadly once the year was up, she had to return to a government school as Goodwill couldn’t cover her grade 3 fees.

When Nickey heard that Nellie was dealing with horrible situations in class, she decided to step forward and cover Nellie’s fees. She made a promise to the family that Nellie would matriculate from a private school.

And so, Nickey went on to cover Nellie’s fees for the last nine years. Sadly with the pandemic affecting so many, Nickey realised this would be the first year she could not help cover the fees. Not one to give up, Nickey started a crowdfund and asked for help. In return, she plans to do 14 half-marathons to help raise awareness.

Nickey never imagined the crowdfund on BackaBuddy would do so well. At least not while she was still planning her runs. Nickey shared her thanks to every person that has helped raise money for Nellie’s education. She shared that every cent above their goal will go towards Nellie’s university studies in 2023.

Nellie is so excited to complete her final school year. Her next dream is to become a nurse as she is passionate about helping others, a characteristic she picked up from Nickey.
