Award-winning and proudly South African author Mohale Mashigo was one of seven people who created the Marvel Legacy #1 comic for Black History Month.

South Africa (02 March 2021) – February is Black History Month in the United States of America. The month is used to highlight and celebrate the people from the past and present that inspired and uplifted the African-American communities throughout history and today.

The celebration looks back at the dark past within the USA but that isn’t the full focus anymore. Today the month is used to celebrate artists, creators, forward-thinkers, change-makers, innovators and more!

This year, Marvel collaborated with several artists from the USA and the rest of the world to honour their incredible characters for Black History Month. One of the collaborators invited to join is Proudly South African Novelist Mohale Mashigo.

Mashigo is an award-winning writer born and raised in beautiful South Africa. She is famed for her works ‘The Yearning’, ‘Intruders: Short Stories’ and her latest release ‘Where is Lulu?’. Mashigo earned her first award from the University of Johannesburg earning the ‘Prize for South African Debut Writing’. She is also a talented songwriter and singer. In 2020, Mashigo won the inaugural Philida Literary Award.

Marvel launched Legacy #1 in celebration of black heroes in the Marvel universe for Black History Month. Mashigo was one of seven creators who shared their talents to help create the action-packed stories for characters Ironheart, Ms Marvel and Shuri.

The comic was released in late February and has received rave reviews. It was sold out almost immediately and people are requesting more stories focused on the characters in Legacy #1. Take a look at the trailer for the comic below.
