Hearts were as full as the gift bags when a dedicated team of volunteers from The Robin Hood Foundation recently transformed a public hospital maternity ward into a haven of celebration, spoiling 70 new moms with essentials to support them during the tender first weeks of their motherhood journey.

Durban, South Africa (06 February 2026) – Every now and then, we share stories about the incredible human beings who dedicate much of their time, despite very busy schedules, to making and collecting essential items for new moms in need.

Moved by sheer empathy and human kindness, these humans do this throughout the year and in all parts of the country, looking to bring comfort, dignity and support to women who have started a new journey into motherhood with very little.

Seventy of these new moms and their bundles of joy at Victoria Mxenge Hospital were on the receiving end of this kindness and support when volunteers from The Robin Hood Foundation SA, who, through their first Love the Babies project, arrived bearing much-needed essentials.

“We had the privilege of spoiling around 70 new moms, gifting each one with lovingly knitted bundles filled with baby essentials. Walking through the ward and hearing the moms chatter, laugh and squeal with delight as they opened their packs was pure magic. Many immediately dressed their babies in the outfits — proud, joyful moments we will never forget,” the Robinhood Foundation team shared.

Upon the special visit, the volunteers also met a brave mom who had been living in the hospital since November with her premature baby.

“For her, this visit was more than a gift — it was a break from routine, a moment of connection, conversation, and a reminder that she is seen and supported. That’s what Love the Babies is truly about,” the team explains.

“It’s not just the gifts. It’s the connection, the kindness, and the understanding of what women go through during childbirth and the early days of motherhood.”

The organisation looks forward to sharing this warmth and connection with many more moms throughout the year and is in desperate need of pre-loved baby clothing and baby items to keep its baby bags going.

If you are able to help, please consider donating:

  • Pre-loved baby clothes
  • Baby blankets, wraps and essentials
  • Gently used baby items

“Your beautiful baby items are given directly, by hand, to deserving moms and their newborns. You can contact Charlotte or drop off donations at any of our 5 drop-off points. Together, we can wrap more moms and babies in love, dignity and care.”
