The Santa Shoebox Project has launched its 2023 SSB Legacy build; building a new creche for Gogo Nxumalo who has cared for children for over 40 years.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (13 June 2023) – In rural KwaZulu-Natal, in the hills of Kwaslima Ngamehlo, stood a small creche run by Gogo Nxumalo. The creche has been running for the last 40 years but for the first time ever, it’s going to stand solid! The Santa Shoebox Project’s SSB Legacy programme has been helping beneficiaries around South Africa, solidify their footprint within their areas.
Gogo Nxumalo’s creche is being rebuilt with a solid foundation, brick walls, windows, doors and a stunning roof overhead. It is a building that will stand the tests of time, weather every storm and become a sanctuary for the children who attend every day.
Included in this life-changing build, the new creche building will have two classrooms, a kitchen, an office, a sick bay, and a secure playground. It is going to bring such joy to the children in the community!

What is SSB Legacy?
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a priority for the Santa Shoebox Project which is why the Legacy programme was launched; to help boost educational support for ECD centres that need it most. The programme runs beyond the annual shoebox project. In the past, the SSB Legacy programme has helped three schools, with this project being its fourth.
“SSB Legacy brings permanent change to the lives of Santa Shoebox beneficiary children and to the impoverished communities in which they live, by establishing new and transforming existing Early Childhood Development Centres in rural South Africa, with the focus on infrastructure & DBE (Department of Basic Education) registration, teacher training, early literacy and water solutions.”
Donations that come in from private donors are collected and allocated to these SSB Legacy projects each year. So if you have ever donated funds to the Santa Shoebox Project, this is where they have gone. A heartwarming, magical contribution indeed!
This project is set to be completed by the end of July, so stay tuned for the final update. Until then, you can find out more about the Santa Shoebox project by visiting the website here.
