South African band Halvar have taken the Southern Africa Wacken title, earning their chance to compete at the world’s biggest heavy metal competiton: Wacken Open Air in Germany!

Global (05 May 2025) — Crank the amps! In big news for African metal heads and especially those from our country, South African band Halvar have risen to the top tier of metal royalty in Southern Africa; officially earning the Sub-Saharan Africa Wacken winner title!

For those new to the Wacken world, this is the metal equivalent to winning the regional championships with a shot to compete at worlds.

The Wacken Metal Battle Sub-Saharan Africa began in 2013 and sees pools of talent come from all over our continent to compete against each other. The big prize is a slot to perform and compete at the final boss of Wacken, Wacken Open Air in Germany.

In Germany, bands from around the world compete for prizes, bragging rights andthe love of the genre, all while having a once-in-a-lifetime-experience.

It’s a huge deal not only for the competitive edge it offers to local musicians for whom international opportunities are limited, but also for the exposure considering Wacken’s reputation and the enormous crowds the Open Air battles attract (the 2025 Open Air battle is already sold out).

The Cape Town-based band Halvar are over the moon at their victory; sharing that it is an honour to represent both country and continent.
