There were cheers and happy tears as a teacher went out of his way to treat and thank his pupils who left him lessons on showing up and leading with love, even when days were tough.

George, South Africa (11 December 2025) – We often discuss the profound impact dedicated teachers have in guiding and preparing their learners for the future – and rightly so.

However, in this piece, we share a different perspective: a touching moment from a teacher who focused on the positive impact his pupils had on him, culminating in a sweet, final surprise as they closed their primary school chapter.

Pacaltsdorp Primary School educator, Mnr VanderBerg, recently delighted the Facebook timeline with a profoundly touching post dedicated to his Grade 7 class. He shared a video showing how he treated them to a party as his final surprise and token of appreciation.

The footage begins with a heartwarming moment. Before they could even see what he had in store for them, they immediately jumped to hug him in delightful anticipation. The video went on to show the children step into a beautifully decorated space at a local food chain, where each learner had their own dedicated seat where snack packs, meals and presents were waiting for them.

What followed were cheers, tears (the happy kind), smiles, selfies and an almost palpable sense of gratitude in the air between a teacher and the learners who made his year.

“I decided to surprise my kids with a farewell party, but the truth is… nothing I could ever plan would come close to what they’ve given me this year. 7B walked into my classroom as learners, but they became my motivation, my reminder of purpose, and the reason I show up with heart every single day,” Mnr VanderBerg said.

He added that this year, the class taught him the importance of being a role model, of showing kindness, of leading with love, even when days were tough.

“They showed me that teaching is not just about lessons in books, but lessons in life.”

This party was his way of thanking these youngsters for the laughter, the challenges, the growth, and the moments that changed him in the best ways.

He wished the class well as they prepared to step into high school and to continue shining the light they carry so well.

In Mnr VanderBerg’s final words:

“Thank you for loving me, trusting me, and allowing me to be part of your journey. You will forever have a home in my heart.”

A perfect farewell to a class that clearly gave him as much joy as he gave them. Now that’s impact and connection wrapped in a moment that truly tugs the heart!
