For the first time, Trevor Noah’s own comedy special has been nominated for an Emmy! This marks the beginning of a new era for the South African comedian beyond the Daily Show.

Global (14 July, 2023) — It’s that time of year again when television die-hards and couch critics eagerly await to see if their favourite shows are in the running for an Emmy (or several).

Fans of hit shows like ‘The Last of Us’ which escalated actor Pedro Pascal into the global spotlight and ‘White Lotus’ which gave Jennifer Coolidge her long-anticipated moment in the sun will relish in knowing that these shows have been nominated across the board—something supporters of the actors who worked for decades to become household names will smile about.

But, one South African also got the global nod of recognition more than once, and it’s the same man who has had laughing (and staying informed) for years.

Trevor Noah might not be new to the Emmys (he won his first Emmy back in 2017 for The Daily Show’s YouTube show and has received multiple nominations for his contribution to TDS since), but this year’s nominations meant a little more than accolades.

While Trevor’s The Daily Show was nominated for Best Talk Series, he was also nominated for his Netflix special ‘I Wish You Would’.

One marks the end of an era for the comedian as one of the most popular hosts in America, while the other highlights a new chapter as his first Emmy nomination outside of the Daily Show (apart from the Annual Grammy Awards Variety Special noms).

Still, it’s the first time one of his comedy specials has received this level of global applause and South Africans everywhere are praising the son of Patricia standing in his own spotlight.

You can find the full Emmy nomination list here.
