The University of Johannesburg has earned its stripes when it comes to impact, claiming an impressive spot on the University Impact Ranking report and the top spot for South Africa!

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 July 2024) — Universities are not just places where great minds become greater. They’re hubs that nurture how young academics see their place in the society outside lecture halls and in many cases, outside the box. They’re places where a new and better world is an option. And more importantly, they’re places where students can see themselves building that new and better world. Universities have a weighted responsibility when it comes to making an impact. And, thanks to a recent ranking report, one of South Africa’s universities is a top shot when it comes to impact that makes a long-lasting difference.

Times Higher Education has published the University Impact Ranking report for 2024. Here, a deep dive has been taken into what universities around the world are doing to make an impact across the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Climate Action and more.

It was South Africa’s University of Johannesburg (UJ) that claimed the most impactful university spot for our country—earning an overall ranking of 93.0!

This comes fittingly considering that last year, UJ made an impressive climb to the world’s highest ranking when it came to impact in the ‘No Poverty’ goal!

It’s a proud moment for Johannesburg, and for a South Africa filled with young change-makers-to-be looking for institutions where they can be a part of impacting the world positively.

Overall, UJ scored the 36th spot in the world for the latest Impact Ranking report.

“These leading universities are recognised for their overarching impact cross several dimensions of sustainable development, making significant contributions to creating a sustainable and resilient future. Their broad-based excellence underscores the importance of holistic approaches to global challenges and highlights the critical role of academia in driving sustainable change,” shared Times Higher Education.

Go UJ!
