Johannesburg, South Africa – 23-year-old Karabo Thosago is being commended after saving a swimmer from drowning in the Planet Fitness gym pool in Craighall Park.

CCTV video footage from the gym shows the swimmer suddenly collapsing under water, after completing a lap. He stays under the water for a while before Thosago jumps in to pull him out.

Other gym staff can be seen running towards the swimmer to assist as well.

Speaking to News24, Thosago explained that he heard a yell and then found the man floating in the water.

“I was so scared, very scared… I’ve never seen something like that. I just thought that if I don’t jump in, then this person can die in a matter of seconds.”

The swimmer – a regular gym user – was immediately transported toa hospital and had made a full recovery.
