It was a miserably cold afternoon in Johannesburg last week when Toni Shuping’s tyre gave way for a second time that week; three men joined her while she waited for the tow truck to arrive.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 April 2023) – Last week, Toni Shuping found herself with yet another tyre issue after repeated pothole incidents. This time, she needed to wait for a tow truck to come to her aid. As she waited on the highway, three men stopped to help. When they realised they couldn’t help, they stayed to keep Toni company while she waited.

Road-side heroes are a big part of South Africa. Finding yourself on the side of a busy South African road with car trouble can be a little hair-raising but that’s not to say there are not absolute heroes out there who would go above and beyond to help. People are inherently good at heart and always willing to help wherever possible. We see this every day and love to celebrate these small good deeds.

Toni popped us a message to give a shout-out to her three heroes. These men made sure she was ok, even in the miserable weather.

“A BIG shout out to the guys from Luri Tech in Kya Sands – Ferdi, Lourens and Sintu. On Friday morning I hit a pothole on Malibongwe just after Witkoppen and within a few minutes Ferdi, the own of Luri Tech, stopped to check on us and asked if he could help.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a spare tyre as I’d hit another pothole a few days before and was already using my spare tyre. Ferdi offered to send two of his guys from the office to come and wait with us until the tow truck arrived.

A few minutes later our knights in shining armour arrive – meet Lourens and Sintu. They waited with us in the cold and rain until the tow truck arrived and they knew we were safe!

Thank you very much to a group of awesome gentlemen. As my sister always says: “Inherently people are good”. Thank to the good people who took care of us! Eternally grateful! – Toni Shuping

South Africans have experiences like this daily but they never make the news. It is moments like this that restore our faith in humanity and remind us that there are truly great people who walk beside us in this world.

Let us know who you want to give a shout-out to. We are always happy to highlight the kindness that inspires.
