Northwood School in Durban is celebrating its 75th birthday by wheeling change into the lives of youngsters who need it through the 75 Bikes initiative!

Durban, South Africa (15 March 2024) — Northwood School is celebrating its Jubilee year by wheeling change into the lives of young communities in need thanks to an initiative dubbed’ 75 Bikes’.

Led by Mr Richter and the school’s Cycling Team, the Northwood School boys set themselves on the path to impact on 29 February when they shared their goal: donating 75 bicycles to communities and individuals in need.

The call for extra bicycles or to give those wheels simply collecting dust in garages instead of experiences went out to their larger Durban North community. And the response so far has been enough to get anyone’s bicycle bell ringing.

As of yesterday, the Northwood Cycling Team has donated 14 bikes to the Go Durban Cycling Academy, with almost 30 bikes in total already donated to the 75 Bikes initiative!

Not only are the Cycling Team and Mr Richter working hard to rally the bikes together, but they’re also repairing old bikes that need some extra elbow grease. The first round of bikes has been fixed up for Go Durban, with more bikes still to come!

Go Durban Cycle Academy is a youth organisation focused on sports accessibility and academic support where cycling plays an important role in the development of young people in Chesterville, Inanda, KwaDebeka and KwaMashu.

The 75 Bicycles initiative embodies youth empowering youth; and will be the reason many youngsters from underserved communities enjoy their first-ever bikes.

Those interested in giving a forgotten bike new life can contact jrichter@nwood.co.za to get involved.
