Remember the thrill and spirited rivalry of looking forward to a sports match against a neighbouring school after class? That very excitement is what a Durban community is hoping to rekindle by collecting hockey sticks for distribution to primary schools.
Bluff, South Africa (26 March 2025) – With a shared vision to reignite the excitement of hockey in the charming town of Bluff and inspire youth to step away from their screens, community members, along with the Bluff Assist team, are joining forces to turn this dream into a vibrant reality.
Last year, members came together to start an initiative to collect hockey equipment in the hopes of resurrecting the sport within the community.
But as with most good things, they take time, and as a result, initial plans did not quite go as they had hoped… but! They did manage to join forces with local primary schools that were only too keen to jump on board!
“We managed to get some donations which helped us buy some new hockey grips and balls, and our friends Sheri and Shaun Mauer spent many days regripping our donated sticks, to bring them back to life,” shares Bluff Assist member, Chantal Bransgrove-Bower.

These new and revamped hockey sticks will be distributed to the local schools with hopes to get matches and tournaments back up and running, and kids back on the field playing sports.
“We are so grateful to everyone who donated equipment, funds and all the shares. Together we truly can make a difference,” thanked Chantal.
There are many more kids and schools that could still benefit from this project. If you, or you happen to know anyone willing to donate hockey equipment, check out the contact details in Bluff Assist’s recent Facebook post.
