Berlin, Germany (27 July 2025) – Surely South Africans cannot be tired of winning, right? Let’s celebrate these exciting results from the 2025 World University Games where South Africa is once again stacking up medals bringing the tally to a total of 16 (and counting!)
From the mighty throws to fast strides, South Africa’s rising athletics stars delivered a performance packed with podium finishes.
Aiden Smith set the tone with a shot put display to be remembered. With purpose in his stance and fire in his throw, he launched the shot and with it, South Africa’s hopes into golden glory. As the metal landed, a new champion was born.
Then came Bayanda Walaza, who did not just run, but ignited the track. Already a gold medalist in the 100m, Bayanda returned to claim a second crown, this time dominating the 200m in breathtaking style. Every stride showing passion and pride.
The momentum did not stop there.

South Africa’s 4x400m relay team added more with a silver medal finish, clocking an impressive 3:16:42. It was a race that tested guts and heart, and they clearly rose to the occasion with smooth exchanges and relentless pace.
And in the 110m hurdles final, Mondray Barnard fought like a warrior. In a race that was defined by fractions of a second, he claimed bronze with a time of 13.59. Just milliseconds behind second place. It was a performance full of grit and the kind of competitive spirit that makes champions.
As the medals stacked up, so too did the smiles and celebrations. This was not just a series of races and throws. It was a statement that South Africa’s future in sports is burning bright with gold, silver, and bronze lighting the way.
