The Abrie van Staden Prestige Byeenkoms continues to shape South African school athletics by offering opportunity, access and high-performance conditions.

Pretoria, South Africa (26 January 2026) – There’s something special about the school athletics season. The nervous energy at the start line and the sound of spikes on tartan. That spirit was alive and well at the 27th annual Abrie van Staden Prestige Byeenkoms, an athletics meeting that has built a reputation as a launchpad for young talent.

“This was our 27th year, and it was the most schools we’ve ever invited,” says event organiser Tobie Holtzhausen.  “We had eight schools taking part, from all over.”

But the longevity of the event isn’t just about tradition. It’s about purpose. According to Tobie, the meet is designed to do what many early-season competitions don’t.

“It’s the first competition of the year after most schools finish their inter-house athletics. We want to provide a proper platform, a good tartan track, electronic timing, quality equipment, so that all learners get a chance to compete, not just the first and second best athletes.”

Behind the scenes, the event runs on teamwork.

“The school staff, teachers, officials from other schools everyone gives up their time, even staying until 9 or 10 at night. Without that, none of this is possible.”

The day wasn’t only about school-level competition. Senior athletes were also brought into the mix through exhibition events, including the 600m and 1500m, designed to give younger competitors a glimpse of what the next level looks like. Watching experienced runners share the same track added an extra layer of inspiration, turning the meet into more than just a results-driven event. And looking ahead, Tobie hints at even bigger plans.

“We’re in talks to bring in a Classic Shootout with top senior athletes. Showing kids where this sport can take them is huge.”

After 27 years, the Abrie van Staden Prestige Byeenkoms is thriving. And if this season’s talent is anything to go by, South African athletics is in very good hands.
