Astronauts haven’t visited the moon in over 50 years. Now, a new crew will adventure back, seeing the first woman and person of colour part of NASA’s next moon mission!
Global (4 April,2023) — Astronauts are heading back to the moon for the first time in over 50 years (the last mission was in December 1972), and this time it’ll be a real leap for mankind thanks to the diverse team part of Artemis II.
The first woman and the first person of colour are part of the awesome four venturing back to the moon, and people everywhere agree that it’s long overdue.
“For the first time in more than 50 years, these individuals – the Artemis II crew – will be the first humans to fly to the vicinity of the Moon. Among the crew are the first woman, first person of color, and first Canadian on a lunar mission, and all four astronauts will represent the best of humanity as they explore for the benefit of all.” —Vanessa Wyche of NASA Johnson Space Centre.
The crew will consist of:
- Christina Koch (the first woman to go to the moon)
- Victor Glover (the first black man to go to the moon)
- Reid Wiseman (commander of the mission)
- Jeremy Hansen (first Canadian to orbit the moon)
The astronauts will orbit the moon on an eight-day mission in late 2024, gearing up for the Artemis 3 moon landing planned for 2025.
Of the star-studded announcement, people around the world couldn’t help but share their pride.
As one user shared on Glover’s Instagram announcement:
“Huge congratulations Sir! As I am a pilot of colour, the news that you will be the pilot of this Artemis mission makes me so happy, proud and I’m not afraid to say it, emotional too. We are so proud of you and of course the other amazing astronauts too.” —sheraazracool.
Others shared “what a time to be alive” amid a sea of congratulations.
For Koch, the response was equally heart-warming.
