The Blue Train, which is the epitome of timeless glamour, is one of the most luxurious trains in the world.
South Africa (16 August 2021) – All aboard! South Africa’s famous Blue Train ranks as the 13th most luxurious train service in the world.
The Blue Train is a five-star hotel on wheels and received this accolade from the Luxury Columnist.
The train’s origins date back to the 1920s when the Union Limited and Union Express steam trains connected the port of Cape Town with the diamond and goldfields of Johannesburg. The tour follows a 1,600km line to the Mother City and takes 27 hours to complete.
“Several of the compartments have full baths, which is a must in the light of the African daytime. The two-day Blue Train is widely recognized as one of the world’s finest shorter luxury train experiences,” says Luxury Columnist.
“It’s the best way to see South Africa’s spectacular scenery as you enjoy butler service, world-class food, and superb wines.”
The Pride of Africa (Rovos Rail) is number ten. The Pride of Africa travels cross-border, visiting Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Zambia on its routes.
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express walks away with the top spot. This train is run by the prestigious Belmond company. The western-most starting point is London, though a popular kick-off is also Venice. From there, the Venice Simplon Orient-Express visits Prague, Budapest, and Vienna before returning to Paris or London.
