At 128 years old – Johanna Mazibuko who lives in Klerksdorp, South Africa – could be the world’s oldest person!
Klerksdorp, South Africa (25 May 2022) – A supercentenarian from Klerksdorp could be the oldest person ever to live, and if the Guinness World Records recognises this fantastic feat, then South Africa would break the current record by six years!
Born on the 11th of May 1894 in the farming community of Ottosdal in the North West, Johanna Mazibuko was the eldest of 12 children. During her time alive, she has witnessed both apartheid and democracy, British colonialism, the country’s independence, two World Wars, the Spanish Flu and COVID-19.
The proud South African credits her long life to a diet of wild spinach and fresh milk, and her advice to the younger generation is always to respect their parents and their elders.
Earlier this year, a campaign in Mahikeng in the North West launched saying it wants the Guinness World Records to recognise Mazibuko as the oldest in the world.
“I believe maMazibuko could have long been put in Guinness book of Records. The whole world would know, but we know that it is never late. As long as we as people in Africa know that there is such a person, we are happy that there is someone with 128 years, whether they try to hide her or what but we know there is,” Prophet OJ Madikong, the initiator of the campaign explains.
According to the Guinness World Records website, the oldest person to ever live was Jeanne Louise Calment from Arles, France, who was born on 21 February 1875 and died on the 4th August 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days old.
The Mazibuko Family recently celebrated the 128th birthday of their grandmother at her home in Klerksdorp. Watch the video below:
